COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) – Wednesday was unveiling day at the Carver High School gymnasium.
Olivia Cochran is considered the best basketball player in the state of Georgia and one of the best in the country. She got further confirmation of this fact when she received her jersey for the upcoming McDonald’s All-American Game.
Cochran is the first Columbus player to be invited to the Elite Showcase. “It means a lot,” Cochran said. “It’s a great accomplishment and I’m proud of myself and proud of how hard I’ve worked to get to where I’m going. I’m just ready to play in the All-Star Game.
The center for the elderly also learned of another honor on its way. Basketball head coach Anson Hundley also announced that his number 44 will be retired at the end of the season, with the jersey hanging in the gym, a first for the Tiger program.
“I got to Carver at the end of my freshman year,” Cochran said, “and I just worked hard to get to where Coach Hundley needed me to do for him and the team. just worked hard, so I’m very proud that he’s doing this for me, and I’m grateful.
The McDonald’s All-American game is scheduled for April 1 in Houston. But there is a more immediate task for Cochran and the Tigers. They open the GHSA Class AAAA qualifiers this weekend, welcoming Thomson. Saturday departure is 2 p.m. ET.
