Major League Soccer and Twitter reinvent football’s iconic post-match jersey exchange by honoring fans
Major League Soccer and Twitter will reinvent the sport’s iconic tradition of a post-match jersey swap by honoring fans after every MLS game played on the weekend of May 29. The jersey swap, which will be decided virtually on Twitter, will highlight fans making a positive impact in the community and include adidas PRIMEBLUE kits made from recycled ocean plastic.
Starting today, Thursday, May 20, until Friday, May 28, fans can nominate other fans via Twitter using the hashtag #JerseySwapEntry, identifying their club and briefly explaining why the person needs to be recognized. . The winning fans will be presented in a special way on Twitter and will receive a jersey worn by the game.
“We are proud to partner with Twitter to recognize the stories of fans doing amazing things in our communities,” said David Bruce, MLS SVP of Branding and Integrated Marketing. “We are a league defined by our unique fan culture and this program is a way to honor inspiring fans and share the positive impact of the MLS soccer community. We’re also excited to reverse the idea of the jersey swap and find a gradual and unexpected twist with a great partner like Twitter.
Immediately after each match, the clubs will announce the winners via Twitter. These tweet announcements will be personalized based on each club, with fans informed in a unique and special way. Examples of tweets include a player holding the jersey worn after the game, a video of the player recognizing the winning fan, a specially curated photo with a message to the fan, and more.
Fans will have the option to purchase adidas PRIMEBLUE jerseys starting today, May 20, at MLSstore.com or at select stadium outlets. PRIMEBLUE is a high performance yarn made from 50% Parley Ocean Plastic, recycled plastic waste intercepted on shores and coastal areas, preventing it from polluting our oceans. The MLS and adidas PRIMEBLUE kits are one of the many ways the league is raising awareness about environmental issues and helping to build sustainable communities as part of MLS WORKS ‘Greener Goals initiative.
